Just after daybreak this morning, the scientists and crew aboard the Investigador spotted the Scarlet Knight Glider bobbing up and down on the surface of the ocean off the coast of Spain. After over 220 days at sea, the glider’s mission has been accomplished.

With the expected change in average ocean temperatures due to global climate change, many commercially and recreationally important fish populations will move in response. As a result, the distributions of some species’ populations will shift, either expanding or contracting due to physiological stressors. In this activity a human-sized board game will generally demonstrate how changes in water temperature may affect fish distributions and, ultimately fisheries.

Ocean observatories are not just watching the ocean; they’re also being used to monitor the impact of humans in urban estuaries like the Hudson River. In this video, produced by Liberty Science Center, Drs. Scott Glenn and Oscar Schofield describe how observing technologies are being used to research what happens where the Hudson River flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
Eutrophication is the process in which excess nutrients from land concentrate in water bodies leading to phytoplankton bloom, bacterial decay and low-oxygen events. This interactive helps students understand this complex and increasingly prevalent process.
