Google Earth: Ocean

From COSEE ENTS

Jump to: navigation, search

Notes: Similar to Google Earth - layers can be turned on and off (i.e. Marine Protected areas) Popular with teachers as an educational tool, within scientist presentations Also has some bathymetry data in certain locations

Use by COSEE: Can be used as a visual aid, media

COSEE-West usage - West has used Google Oceans in lesson plans using water and sediment quality data from the Southern California Coastal Water Resources Project (SCCWRP). KML/KMZ files can be created whereby place markers are inserted into the area(s) of interest. Tables, graphs, or lists of the data found at that longitude and latitude can be created so that the information pops up whenever the place marker is clicked on. Some facility with Java is needed to create these files, but it is pretty simple to pick up.
