Thank you, everyone, for your patience as we work out the logistics for the Live Calls to the Ross Sea.

Based on the survey data we have created the following schedule:

    Wednesday, January 26, 2010 1:00PM
    Thursday, January 27, 2010 12:00PM noon
    Tuesday, February 1, 2010 1:00PM
    Wednesday, February 2, 2010 12:00PM noon
    Friday, February 4, 2010 12:30PM
    Monday, February 7, 2010 11:30AM
    Tuesday, February 8, 2010 1:00PM
    Thursday, February 10, 2010 1:00PM
    Friday, February 11, 2010 12:00PM noon

We have assigned each of you a date to participate in a webinar. By limiting the number of schools participating in any one call, we ensure that everyone gets time to participate.

You should have an email from me giving you your participation date. Of course you are welcome to listen in to any other calls that fit your schedule.

Please contact me (kflorio@lsc.org, 201-253-1586, or through a private message on this workgroup) if your circumstances have changed and the assigned date/time no longer works for you.

With one call down and eight more to go, here’s hoping the weather cooperates with the rest! Here is the schedule for the remaining calls (there is a small change from the original schedule). As always, you are welcome to listen in on as many calls as you like; please check this thread for any schedule changes. I will post any changes here as they happen.

All calls will connect through http://www.coseenow.net/webinar

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Katie,
Do we have any options if we are snowed out next Wednesday?

I heard that a renegade group of penguins was heading for NJ- cold weather, lots of snow, no seals, and plenty of fish.

    Loris,

We do have snow plans in place. Kate will reach out to you should this become a likely scenario. The weather has been brutal this winter. Your students might be amused to know the Ross Sea Team has been teasing us about the weather here being colder and snowier than there right now. Use my cell phone ###-###-#### if delayed openings/early closures/ closed school are going to happen for you.

I’ll email you the details of who will be on the call Wednesday, as soon as I hear, that way your students can direct questions toward the specialties being represented. Please don’t forget to email me the questions your students are interested in several days ahead of time, it is a big help to the scientists in choosing who of them will be on the call.

Here’s hoping to no more snow.

    Katie,
Since we recently finished a cell biology and are working on element types, phases, solutions, and gas laws, I think we’ll be focusing on things like

Why doesn’t iron enter the Ross Sea from the rocks?
Does carbon dioxide in the air decrease as plankton grow into a bloom?
Does temperature and salinity affect iron solubility?
How much carbon dioxide is stored in the ocean?
Is there more carbon dioxide in the colder oceans?
What happens to plankton in the winter when there’s limited sun and more ice?

We’d like to wish Menglei Chu “Xin Nian Kuai Le” or “Gong she fa ze” since the Year of the Rabbit starts Feb. 3.

The weather Tuesday and Wednesday is looking interesting.

    More Questions
    Julia D.
How long does it usually take you to set up your main science lab?
When you are using walkie-talkies underwater, why do you have to use codenames? Wouldn’t it be easier to use your real names?

    Ciana M.
What is your emergency action plan on the ship when rough waters occur? And how much does it affect your journey?

    Questions from Ed
How does the glider face obstacles like ice?
How many hours can you spend on the “Palmer” before you have to refuel
    again?
What is the depth limitations of the glider?

  • Profile picture of Loris Chen Loris Chen said 2 years, 3 months ago ago:

Oh, well. The kids seem to think I can answer the chemistry questions and are in to the glider. We still need to ask some chemistry questions.

    Lori,

You have a few chemistry ones in the initial batch, so that will be good! We don’t know yet which scientists will be on the call but they have all been great at answering all the questions.

Today we had our ninth and last Live Call with the ship. I think overall they were a big success and also a lot of fun for both the participating scientists and students.

Plus, we’ve heard from several scientists that they loved hearing and answering all the great questions asked by your students. The questions helped them think a lot about their own research. So kudos to all of you for preparing your classes so well.

I just wanted to let you know that you can now find recordings of all of the calls on the following page.

    http://coseenow.net/ross-sea/live-calls/

Due to the combination of schools and scientists, each call was quite unique, so I encourage you to check out the other calls. In particular, the 2/10 12pm call featured the Nathaniel B. Palmer’s Captain. There were a lot of cool questions about how large research ships like the Palmer operate, especially in polar seas. Definitely worth a listen.

Thank you again for participating in the Ross Sea Connection program. We hope to connect with each of you soon to hear how everything went. Of course, the cruise is still on for another week, so there’s still lots more fun to see!

Thank you so much Sage for bringing this all together. My students had a wonderful time on their phone call to the ship. It’s hard to express here, we had 2 classes come in so 40 people crammed into my classroom. And they were listening intently. The PowerPoint slides that you put up during the call helped them a lot.

    Thanks again,
    Laura
