Summer is for Sand Castles

Hi everyone! Hope your summer is going well.  This week we are posting about sand castles.  If you remember, we had a sand castle building contest during the AM of our trip to Sandy Hook.  Al and Sandy at the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium did a great job of helping us learn about what lives in the Bay with seining  activities and a little about ocean currents with our long shore current measuring using a simple piece of fruit– an orange!

Since everyone had a great time during this activity we thought we would create a  lesson plan you can use to share the fun with your community.    Please be sure to download the lesson that contains some really cool close up pictures of the samples of sand that we collected.  The sand cards allow you to get a better view of the sand you used to create your sand castle.  What do you think about the sand samples?  Is the size of the grain what you would have expected?  What are some factors that might move the sand around in the beach habitat?
