People spend only 20% of their lives in formal schooling. If we hope to increase the ocean literacy of our population then we need to look towards informal or free-choice learning opportunities. Observing systems provide a vast array of data and stories ripe for these environments. This workgroup encourages scientists and informal educators to collaborate to make these resources accessible to the public.

Hi Katie, those are interesting comments “from the field.” Thanks for sharing them. I hope they help us focus the activities and messages we should work on. I think much of our response will have to be regionally based, as it’s clear that it’s playing differently in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast and Gulf areas.

I’m familiar with what COSIA developed this year, I think I am looking for some things that are also more specific to the Gulf Oil spill and can serve double duty by exposing people to some OOS. I will certainly post my thoughts as I progress.
