More great information, and quite an interesting “conversation.” I think the above advice in the three examples still holds despite the new changes.
A blank slate which can be filled with all of the project […]

Britt, Chris, Sharon, and Liesl,
Even after being posted almost two years ago, I have found in the information contained in these three examples to be of tremendous help in assisting a scientist with Broader […]

Here is a simple temperature range graph (type = floating column graph) that is a final product of our Bridge/COSEE-NOW data activity: Can’t Take the Heat?, which compares the heat capacity of air vs. water. We’ll take any feedback you have! http://www2.vims.edu/bridge/TipsContent/HeatCapacity/Figure2a.pdf It’s a pdf and for some reason, the axes…[Read more]

One I use for business and play is the NOAA National Data Buoy Center (http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov). So many buoys, weather stations, etc. all in one spot! Locally, the Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy System (http://www.buoybay.org) has a real simple interface, great data display, and a very powerful graphing utility. Of course, my most recommended…[Read more]

Hey everybody, I’ve been pondering an activity that uses high frequency radar. I did a quick and dirty needs assessment and it appears that Coast Guard search and rescue would be the most interesting approach for students. Does anyone know of existing HF radar/CODAR activities, or activities that look at search and rescue ops? I […]

Does a can of soda float? Does salt water really make that much difference? What’s a Plimsoll mark? Buoyancy can be a difficult concept for students. It’s all about density! With this hands-on introduction to teaching buoyancy from the Bridge website and COSEE-NOW, students work through activities and demonstrations that use online resources and ocean observing systems data […]

It was late June. The temperature was 95 degrees with 110% humidity. The monkey was definitely on our backs, as my boss would say. My co-workers and I stood there on the dilapidated VIMS pier with 12 high school science teachers, VIMS scientist Mark Patterson, VIMS technician Todd Nelson, and the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) Fetch. […]

By now everyone has heard that Google recently released its latest and greatest version of Google Earth (version 5.0) complete with an abundance of ocean “stuff:” shipwreck information; video clips; you can even rate kite surfting spots. But what all the articles and news reports have neglected to tell us is that you can spend […]
