    I’ll get this going…
I was inspired while learning from Sue about tracking Sea Turtles off of the coast of Puerto Rico. I mentioned to the group that I could incorporate this topic into my Spanish classroom […]

Hello Everyone!  I am glad to say that we had a great day at RU IMCS on Tuesday!  It was really nice to see that there are still many teachers interested in the incorporation of the Ocean Literacy topics into […]

ThumbnailI am asking this question for all of you to give a detailed summary of what your MARE programs look like as of the first day of December. We have all discussed our ideas at our October meeting and I’d just like […]

  • It must be the warm weather that has me thinking about the ocean. How about all of you out there? Any ideas for the spring regarding MARE/Ocean Science in your classrooms? Class trips to the beach? Planning any outdoor lessons involving your local watershed? Let us all know! Chime in and give us an update! It’ll only take a minute!!

    • Hey Mike,

I’m thinking that given our new founded video conferencing capabilities that we may be able to bring the ocean to us. There must be organizations that would want to video conference with us, if not this year then for next.

  • This is the PowerPoint show that we used to demonstrate the Rate-A-Plate activity using the Monterrey Bay Aquarium Seafood Guides. Feel free to edit it and customize it to meet the needs of your target audience. Also, do some research and find what some local restaurants are actually serving and include those images for discussion into the…[Read more]

  • Our MARE program has hit some bumps during the first few months of school. However, we have a great leadership team that is comprised of teachers from multiple subject areas. Some of you might recall from our October meeting that due to all of the cuts, some classroom space has become available for us to […]

Laura, Hey! It’s been a whirlwind around here! I didn’t think that I was going to be able to accomplish half of what I’d originally set out to do this year but somehow, its starting to come together–albeit in November. The weather wall works well, I changed it into a hurricane tracking center. I also […]

Hey everyone! I just started to hash out the times that I’ll have available to spend in our new Ocean Science classroom and although it isn’t much, yet, I already have students leaving their schedule with me so that we can coordinate lab time! I’m excited, we even had our Superintendent come through our building […]

  • I think it would be very relevant to have students, especially young ones, physically see how quickly bacteria multiplies. Are there any “classroom safe” experiments that could demonstrate the process clearly? Maybe we could have Rob create a physical activity demonstrating the process kinesthetically… 😉

    Gaileen,
I think that would be a great idea! Wouldn’t it be great to see if we could have kids interacting between schools all within the subject of MARE!! In your school, what grade levels are your kids that are in the RU Science Cool? club?

Thanks for posting Elizabeth! I would LOVE to hear your ideas on how you’ll incorporate math! I’ve seen it done a bunch of different ways, but I think it would help other folks to see just how it can be done. Do you have any ideas on how you would personalize your lessons to incorporate […]

  • Yeah, even year after year our Ocean Week here at Eisenhower has changed a few times. I think it’s better to look at individual school calendars to see what week will work best. We actually start ours on a Thursday and then end on the following Wednesday. A word of advice–check the state testing and […]

I LOVE THIS IDEA!! After hearing Gail at this year’s Institute, a whole bunch of ideas started to run through my head! Some I can share, some I can’t until the time is right. Jason and I have been working on creating a MARE club and an Ocean Science room in our school. The crazy […]

ThumbnailHey Everyone! I have had the fortunate opportunity to spend some more time than usual “down the shore” this summer. As the time winds down, and I start to shift my focus to my classroom and school “stuff”, I am getting excited to see what develops. It is always a challenge to figure out how I can […]
