Jason, are you using exterior house paint or something like rustoleum paint on the container? We have one of these shipping containers outside our school to store extra furniture….your idea may be contagious here!

Jason, I love the idea of the ocean tiles. As our fourth graders move to the school next door for fifth grade, they each make a 6X6″ tile to leave a mark or message at Cedar Creek School. The tiles line the top […]

I am fortunate that we are one of the last remaining “MARE Districts” were MARE is part of our curriculum K-6. That being said, I believe that the reason MARE survives in our schools is the dedication of the […]

After completing the one day seminar, July 17, how will you use the ocean science connections in your classroom? We would love feedback or questions on how you see the literature, foreign language, physical […]

I was browsing through the October 30 issue of The Lacey-Barnegat Times and was excited to see 2010 MARE Summer Institute participant Gina Verderosa featured in an article! Gina received at $2,500 Go Green grant from the Ocean First Foundation to implement a variety of environmentally themed projects at the Joseph T. Donahue School in Barnegat, NJ. The grant money […]

Susan Haskell wrote a new blog post How does MARE fit with the NJCCC STANDARDS? in the group MARE: 13 years, 10 months ago
The honest answer is easily and everywhere! The MARE activities span multiple disciplines including components of writing, reading, art, cooperative learning, math, history, physical education and of course Science! These same activities often spark extension lessons in music, interpersonal skills, vocabulary and spelling, and theater. For example, our second grade classes study The Sandy Beach in the MARE […]

Hi Elizabeth, This sounds like a great place to start! I think you can tie this lesson into map skills in your Social Studies curriculum too, by adding county or state mapping into the sustainable seafood local guide. Perhaps the students could do a few site visits to the restaurants and take pictures or video. […]

Please post a short, informal desciption of your project in this forum. Students teaching students: At our MARE 10 year anniversary sharing session at RU, one school showcased students teaching students what they have learned through the MARE program. I loved this idea. Students from a MARE school can visit a NON-MARE school and share their knowledge. Can you imagine the excitement of third graders teaching peers…[Read more]

April brings the excitement of MARE and Ocean week! If you haven’t started planning your Ocean week, it is not too late. With recent budget cuts, this is the year to look for “freebies” in your local community. If you live in a coastal community, contact local dive shops who often will come to talk with your students for free and have wonderful…[Read more]
