During the course of the research mission, the scientists at the Palmer Research station and back at their home institutions participated in a series of Live Calls with participating high school students back in Kansas. These calls were designed to enable students to ask scientists questions about the research mission and working in Antarctica, as well as to support the classroom efforts of the teachers participating in Project PARKA.
Each classroom participated in two live calls. The first call was during the second week of January (January 8th, 9th, or 10th). During this call students talked with the scientists about getting the lab ready for the experiments, the set-up of the experiments and conducting research down at Palmer Research Station. The second call was in the third week of February (February 19th, 20th, or 21st). During this call the students talked with the scientists about how the experiments are going/went, what challenges and successes the researchers have had and additional questions pertaining to the research mission and/or the students’ investigations.
We used ElluminateLive! as the platform for the live calls. For the teachers to learn more about ElluminateLive!, we suggested the teachers visit the Support page or review the set-up instructions that we put together for the PARKA call and the Audio Setup Wizard.
