Live Calls
During the course of the cruise, the scientists and crew aboard the Nathaniel B. Palmer participated in a series of Live Calls with middle school students back in the United States. These calls were designed to support the classroom efforts of the educators who participated in the summer’s Ross Sea teacher workshop.
Each call featured a quick update on the cruise, and then offered students an opportunity to ask questions about the research being conducted at sea. Recordings of each call were posted here shortly after the call was completed, so everyone can listen in on the action.
* A discussion about the technology that goes into making theses Live Calls happen can be accessed at: Live Call Technology.

Tips from educators on how to get your students to develop good questions:
- “If you can google it, then don’t ask it…” as a rule.
- Do a lot of modeling about what makes a good question ~ giving a quick 5 minute talk while showing the pictures and then doing a think-aloud to come up with questions.
- “If you could talk to your favorite quarterback for 10 minutes ~ what would you ask him?” as a warm-up to developing questions.
