Professional Bio | I oversee WHOI’s education programs which include the WHOI component of the MIT-WHOI Joint Program WHOI Postdoc Program summer undergraduate fellow programs and some K-12 outreach. I also participate in the overall management of the institution and represent WHOI on various national and international committees. |
Personal Interests
My Research Interests | My recent research projects and scientific publications involved satellite and aircraft remote sensing of the ocean for understanding biological oceanographic processes with primary funding from NASA HQ. I participated in the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) in the 1980s and 1990s. I also have served on many national and international committees and panels and am currently Chair of the international group (IOCCG) that seeks international coordination for satellite measurements of satellite ocean color radiometry and its application for understanding regional to global ocean patterns in the productivity of the seas. |
My Teaching Interests | While a faculty member of the Graduate School of Oceanography University of Rhode Island I developed and taught graduate courses on ocean color remote sensing and biooptics as well as the processes affecting the productivity of ocean margin waters. |
My Hobbies | My hobbies are gardening golf and I coached a lot of youth sports (baseball basketball and soccer) when my kids were young. |
