Do you know the exact dates for Ocean Week 2011? I have tried to check on google and keep getting different dates.
Thanks,

I just received my monthly copy of National Geographic. They are publishing a special issue focusing on Oceans. It will be available on September 14th for $10.99. The description from the magazine says “Oceans cover nearly three-fourths of our globe and play a role of equal significance in Earth’s biodiversity. Our newest special issue explains […]

Hi Joanne, Oh, I know what you mean about overwhelming people. I think you are right on track and I really like your idea of getting student input for the wiki pages… I can’t wait to see what you and they come up with. I’m glad the link came in handy… and please let me […]

Hi All – I just had a wonderful conversation with Dr. Bruce McFadden who is the Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology, at the Florida Museum of Natural History at University of Florida. He was an NSF rotator for ISE and has been thinking about Broader Impacts a lot. I am attaching two paper references that discuss […]

Agreed whole-heartedly! This year’s MARE group is wonderful. Everyone put in 100% and it was a hectic pace sometimes.
Thanks Rob for the neat movement activities! I’m always amazed at the ways you incorporate science concepts into movement.

Laura, Your idea of creating picture books is exactly what I also planned on working toward. Thanks for the link to windows2universe.org. I use that site often but you link sure saved me time. I can’t wait to explore it more. Sept. 1 and 2 we have a district wide meeting so at lunch time […]

I just remembered a site about ocean currents called “Ducks in the Flow” which lets you print a book/has classroom activities. http://www.windows2universe.org/teacher_resources/ocean_education/currents_main.html Here’s their blurb about it: “This module, intended for grades 3-5, includes a storybook and three classroom activities. In the…[Read more]

Joanne, I thing you’re absolutely right! I know I’ve used picture books with my 6th grade students ~ but with a twist. We created non-fiction picture books for the 1st graders on an ocean topic of their choice… so we had to look at some picture books to get an idea of how to make […]

Thanks Crystal for attachments. I know I can use the “Why Use Non-fiction…” attachment with others in my school to encourage them to use non-fiction reading in their own classes. I already have a cart full of book and a display of books on the ocean theme in my room. My media specialist has been […]

This file contains reviewing sources for science books. Most should be available in your school library if you ask your librarian. SB & F is definitely worth the $45 to subscribe on your own, as is becoming a member of NSTA. Their journal “Science and Children” (grades K-6) contains monthly resource reviews, and an annual […]

This file shares the many text features students will need to understand when using nonfiction. Remember that it is preferable to use a reading level several below a student’s normal reading level due to the high content load of nonfiction books.
