Using real-time data from ocean observing systems we can connect the public to the ocean like never before. But making data usable and understandable is not easy. This workgroup connects data translators, scientists and educators interested in using real-time data in their classroom to figure out the best ways to visualize and interact with OOS data.

Click on Data Explorer from the NEPTUNE Canada homepage: http://www.neptunecanada.ca/ . You will need to register, but once inside you can access data from numerous instruments on our network and use various data tools developed as part of Oceans 2.0.

Since the title is this thread asks for design resources in general… I recently ran across this article, ” A Tour through the Visualization Zoo ” that describes a number of different information visualization approaches, many of which are probably new to those of use who have been living in the world of geophysical visualizations. That said, […]

@Chris, this is an good approach. Some recommendations: 1) The various color differences do not add any information. That’s what you have category labels. That said, you should use different colors for air and water, but make sure they complement each other unless you’re trying to make one stand out on purpose. 2) I might […]

Color is (obviously) a major issue in visualization, well, for that matter it’s an important component of design in general. There are entire books on just choosing the right colors (or fonts) for your design. But guidance for scientific visualization is a bit harder to find. Continuing on Sarah’s theme, choosing color palettes that work […]

I ran a series of ocean lessons last week with some 10-14 year old students, using data. It was interesting to seem them struggle with the SST data on a worksheet even with focused questions and guidance, but when we took the same data and turned it into a competitive game they used that data […]

NEO from NASA allows users to pull data from specific dates of interest. All sorts of data sets, not just ocean. Global views or regional by swath. Also an “analysis” tool for three or more images (I’m not really familiar with that part).

I recommend this data site: http://www.geomapapp.org/ It’s wonderful for data visualization of bathymetry. GeoMapApp is an earth science exploration and visualization application that is continually being expanded as part of the Marine Geoscience Data System (MGDS) at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. The application…[Read more]

Here is a simple temperature range graph (type = floating column graph) that is a final product of our Bridge/COSEE-NOW data activity: Can’t Take the Heat?, which compares the heat capacity of air vs. water. We’ll take any feedback you have! http://www2.vims.edu/bridge/TipsContent/HeatCapacity/Figure2a.pdf It’s a pdf and for some reason, the axes…[Read more]

One I use for business and play is the NOAA National Data Buoy Center (http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov). So many buoys, weather stations, etc. all in one spot! Locally, the Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy System (http://www.buoybay.org) has a real simple interface, great data display, and a very powerful graphing utility. Of course, my most recommended…[Read more]
