For everyone who is interested in sustainable seafood, The October, 2010 issue of National Geographic has a GREAT article in it on sustainable seafood and the effects of overfishing. I highly recommend getting a copy and using it as one of your resources if you have older students, or as background information for yourself if […]

April 12th works for me. There’s nothing on the school calendar. I’ll be bringing my environmental club. At our first meeting last week I had 38 kids grades 5 thru 8. I know there are kids who want to join but missed last week’s meeting. I am going to weed out the occasional showers-up. I’ll […]

April 12th looks good as long as no ASK testing is set for then. I have to meet with our principal for final approval and paper work but at this time we will have about 24 students in all from Alexandria Middle School. We are working on plans to bring about 8 eighth graders and […]

Wow! Mike that is so great! Squid can be a little stinky, so I use fans to direct the stench out the windows and make sure it doesn’t get sucked into the ventilation system. I can’t wait to see pix and hear the stories.

Hey everyone! I just started to hash out the times that I’ll have available to spend in our new Ocean Science classroom and although it isn’t much, yet, I already have students leaving their schedule with me so that we can coordinate lab time! I’m excited, we even had our Superintendent come through our building […]

Hi Joanne,
Yikes for that poor fellow who started such a conversation he had to walk away! It sounds like you got things going. Good luck on back to school night!

Sage, Thanks so much for the link to the animation. I usually just show a static picture using red and blue colors, but this really shows how the water moves. I think the 1st one listed worked best for my system. The end one, though a larger file (so I thought would be better) was […]

Actually, if you look up Ocean on Wikipedia, you will see an image that links you to the entry on “World Ocean” which emphasizes the interconnectedness of the different oceanic areas or divisions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Ocean The nice thing about Wikipedia is that it often represents the consensus on new thinking long before other web…[Read more]

Laura, The students really did talk to their parents about school. Thus, they did ask the question they thought might stump them, ” How many oceans are there?” They told me their parents answers varied greatly and only a few said one. Two students are twins so of course the one asked and the other […]

Hi Elizabeth, Did you get your bulletin board up yet? I used one of the Flickr pix of the clamming boat in my welcome back for my students, and told them how we’d been “behind the scenes” learning all about the clamming industry ~ a teaser for things to come. I’m looking forward to hearing […]

Hi Joanne,
I LOVE how you got the kids REALLY THINKING! That’s one of the harder things to put together, and you seem to have woven it seamlessly into what you’re doing. So I’m dying to know what their parents said! Dinner conversations must have been very interesting that night!

Only a few days into the start of school and my 6th graders are so interested in our Ocean studies! After reading the book “The Gull Story” yesterday, today I did the activity where you have students work in teams to come up with a number for how many oceans there are. They had fun […]

I heard on the television show “River Monsters” about the ocean quahog found of the coast of Iceland. This was referenced when we were at the docks in Atlantic City. I also found this article relating to the age of the quahogs. It may be helpful when sharing information regarding sustainable seafood. Imperceptible senescence: ageing […]
