Hi Katie, those are interesting comments “from the field.” Thanks for sharing them. I hope they help us focus the activities and messages we should work on. I think much of our response will have to be regionally based, as it’s clear that it’s playing differently in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast and Gulf areas.

Using multiple temperature sensors on different colored pieces of paper under a light source, students can investigate how the color of objects impact how much energy they can absorb. Students can also compare their results with satellite images of land use, vegetation and temperatures around cities to explore the human impacts of how development can […]

In this activity, kids use a non-contact temperature sensor to explore temperatures in the environment around them and what factors may impact the temperatures of objects. Through this investigation, they learn how both instantaneous weather and long-term climate may vary on regional, local and small scales. Please let us know what suggestions you…[Read more]

Sage Lichtenwalner started the forum topic Weather vs. Climate in the group 4-H Climate Change Investigations: 14 years, 4 months ago
In this activity, kids have an opportunity to take real-time measurements of the weather (temperature, humidity, barometric pressure) and compare those values with the local climatology (using either graphs from city-data or data from weather underground). The goal is for kids to understand that weather data is instantaneous and highly variable…[Read more]

During our June 10th workshop, we demoed the beta version of our new NJ 4-H Climate Change Investigations kits. Of course, the highlight of these kits are the innovative touch-screen SPARK Science Learning Systems from Pasco that kids can use to measure, record and analyze data about the world around them, just like real scientists do. Everyone […]

Since the title is this thread asks for design resources in general… I recently ran across this article, ” A Tour through the Visualization Zoo ” that describes a number of different information visualization approaches, many of which are probably new to those of use who have been living in the world of geophysical visualizations. That said, […]

@Chris, this is an good approach. Some recommendations: 1) The various color differences do not add any information. That’s what you have category labels. That said, you should use different colors for air and water, but make sure they complement each other unless you’re trying to make one stand out on purpose. 2) I might […]

Color is (obviously) a major issue in visualization, well, for that matter it’s an important component of design in general. There are entire books on just choosing the right colors (or fonts) for your design. But guidance for scientific visualization is a bit harder to find. Continuing on Sarah’s theme, choosing color palettes that work […]

Hi Jennifer – I am sure Sharon will have specific partner ideas for you but I will chime in anyway. I am not sure if you have seen this – http://outreach.caltech.edu/documents/EO_brochure.pdf. It has a pretty long list of programs offered by Caltech outreach oriented. I apologise if you have already seen this. In addition to […]

As we discussed on today’s webinar, on the 25th we will explore more research-based recommendations for creating and using visualizations with public audiences. Between now and then, please try one of two things: 1) Make a new visualization (or adapt an old one) based on what we’ve talked about and try it out with some […]

What is your favorite ocean observatory data portal? What cool features does it have that could be useful in educational settings? During our first “Ocean Data in Education” webinar yesterday, many participants shared some of the ocean observatory web sites they like or work on. It was a great list, so we asking everyone to […]
